New National Report Highlights System‑Wide Workforce Fragility in Adult Social Care
A new nationwide report from Care England and Sona provides a clear, evidence based view of the pressures shaping adult social care today — pressures that deeply affect providers across the Yorkshire & Humber region.
The research reinforces what care associations across the region have consistently raised with partners, commissioners, and regulators: workforce strain is now the baseline operating environment, not an occasional challenge.
🔑 Key findings affecting our region:
– Almost half of providers (49%) experience short staffing at least sometimes, with LA‑funded services hit hardest.
– Services stay afloat through overtime, agency use, task redistribution, and managers covering shifts, increasing burnout and long‑term instability.
– Digital maturity is shown to significantly strengthen care delivery, risk management, and commissioner negotiation.
– Staff intent to stay (72%) is high — but often sustained by goodwill and overextension, not system resilience.
This report validates what YHCAA and local care associations have been communicating for years: even where services appear fully staffed, they may be operationally fragile.
We will continue to use this evidence in discussions with CQC, CAA, ADASS, DHSC and local authorities as part of our ongoing work to improve sector resilience. Please read the full report Adult social care insights: workforce stability, digital impact and financial confidence – Care England
